Gold Coast Premier League – Round 6 Preview

Friday, 24 April 2009

EARLY days it may be, but round 6 in the Gold Coast Premier League is shaping as a vital set of fixtures for those clubs with Premiership aspirations.

Only pundits with a sense of adventure would back against current league leaders, Gold Coast Knights, extending their lead at the top when they face Tweed Valley on Sunday.

Already 3 points clear and with a 100% record thrown in for good measure, the Knights line up against a Tweed Valley side who are still finding their feet in the Premier League and Coach John Stewart will no doubt be confident about heading back to Carrara with another victory in the bag.

The Knights’ excellent form heaps pressure on the clubs who have their own title aspirations, but keeping pace with Stewart’s men is crucial if those aspirations are to be realised.

Among the chasing pack is second-placed Palm Beach who must confront a Burleigh Heads outfit that may have finally found a winning groove after their thrilling 4-3 win over Southport last week.

Palm Beach demolished Broadbeach United 4-1 with the margin of victory surprising many in light of Broadbeach’s own promising start to the campaign.

Currently jockeying for position below the top two are four sides locked on 7 points followed by Musgrave on 6.

Magic United head the pack on goal difference and they won’t have it easy when they visit Coomera on Saturday night. Coomera overcame Musgrave last weekend in a confidence-boosting win, but Magic threw away a 2-goal lead to end up all square against Surfers Paradise.

Having succumbed to Burleigh Heads in round 5, Southport face another test when Musgrave visit

Mualla Drive
on Sunday afternoon. Both will see this one as 3 important points, so expect a tight affair from two teams who know defeat here would be a major setback.

Broadbeach have the ideal opportunity to return to winning ways with a trip to struggling Mudgeeraba. The longer they go without winning, the more likely they are to win, but the formbook says Mudgeeraba will suffer again at the hands of Broadbeach, who will be desperate to register the win.

Nerang’s first 3-pointer of the season against Tweed Valley last week could inspire them to give Surfers Paradise a run for their money at Glennon Park.

Surfers’ Kiwi Striker Jason Haines is in hot form and is the man to watch for the Nerang rearguard if they are to record back-to-back victories and propel themselves up the ladder.

Thanks to their gritty spirit and a brace from Haines, Keith Garland’s men came from behind to draw 2-2 with Magic last weekend and will be looking to really kick-start their season. Expectations were a little higher for Surfers this term and Garland will expect his troops to get the points on Saturday night.

There’s plenty of good football on offer in the Gold Coast Premier League once again, so get out there and support your local club.

Gold Coast United players Zenon Caravella, Richard Greer and James Brown will be at

Mallawa Drive
for the Palm Beach/Burleigh Heads clash from 4.30pm to sign autographs, pose for pictures and take in the action.
