Football expo set to be a hit for fans

Tue Jan 24 2012

Gold Coast United, alongside a host of local clubs, will be sporting their team colours in a vibrant display at the Rebel Sports Precinct in Pacific Fair on January 28th from 10am to 4pm.

The Gold Coast Soccer initiative will be a festival of football with players, coaches and managers from each club manning team stalls.

Clubs from north to south of the coast will come under the watchful gaze of the code’s custodians, with match referees on hand to offer yet more insight to the world of the round ball game.

Regardless if you are the next Ben Halloran or just keen to have a kick around with your pals, talking to club representatives and mingling with United players will quickly find you immersed within the local football community.

The day is not only for those interested in launching their football careers, but also for seasoned regulars with many a campaign already under their belts.

With a worthy cause in mind, Gold Coast Soccer Chairman Jeff Kemp hopes the event will bring local teams together to develop a collective football spirit.

“What I am trying to do is get members and clubs to see they are part of a larger organisation; I want to start building the feeling of a football community on the Gold Coast rather than just an insular club feel,” said Mr Kemp.

“The other reason [for the expo] is all the new people on the Gold Coast. We want people to come along and talk to us and we can encourage them to choose a club that suits their lifestyle and their family.”

The United players will be busy signing autographs and mingling with fans to further enhance this community spirit, showing the gap from local to professional football is easily bridged.

“Perhaps, from time to time when there’s a bit of a crowd, I might get them up on stage and introduce them as the Gold Coast United players,” said Mr Kemp.

“We are trying to have our kids look to Gold Coast United as a career pathway.”

The expo will include stalls, TVs and a stage and Mr Kemp hopes the spectacle will attract large numbers.

“We will have the corridor set up a bit like the community hall on Election Day; there will be 15 tables, two clubs on each table, with team signage and people from each club there.”
