Gold Coast Premier League – Round 8 Review
Burleigh edge Magic in nine-goal thriller

BURLEIGH Heads’ pursuit of league leaders Gold Coast Knights gathered pace at the weekend when Col Phelan’s men registered their fourth straight win in a nine-goal thriller against Magic United.

Burleigh prevailed 5-4 to make it seventeen goals in their last four games, but they also have ten in the goals against column and it this statistic that will be giving Phelan one or two grey hairs.

With the exception of their 4-0 demolition of Palm Beach recently, Burleigh edged it in two seven-goal thrillers prior to this weekend’s goal-fest at Pizzey Park.

Phelan’s glee at his side’s march up the ladder might be tinged with frustration, but for Magic’s Brett Budwee frustration is the operative word. Budwee’s talented and hard-working side have now only won one of their last five outings and more consistency is needed if they are to mount a credible challenge on the finals places.

Leaders Gold Coast Knights eased their way past Surfers Paradise with a comfortable 5-1 victory to maintain their two-point gap at the top. It was the Knights’ sixth win in seven games and their biggest win of the campaign, confirming their status as title favourites.

Keeping the pressure on though are Broadbeach United who narrowly beat Nerang by two goals to one. Broadbeach have found a level of consistency this term and look well equipped to stop the Knights from pulling too far ahead. Nerang on the other hand look destined for a season of struggle and need to find a winning formula sooner rather than later.

Musgrave recorded back-to-back victories for the second time this season to consign Tweed Valley to their fifth loss of the year. The result leaves Musgrave in fourth place, ahead of Coomera and Burleigh Heads on goal difference.

Coomera resumed winning form thanks to a 5-3 result over bottom-placed Mudgeeraba, who will be disappointed to have lost having found the net three times. Mudgeeraba look as if a win is just around the corner and their opponents in the next few rounds will need to be wary.

Palm Beach kept pace with the leaders after taking care of Southport with a 4-2 win. Palmy trail Gold Coast Knights by three points and look likely to figure prominently in the finals places.
